Within ALJ Grant for Funding Scientific Research in the Arab World Arab Science and Technology Foundation runs a Research Project on Preparing Silicon out of the Remnants of Fertilizer Factories.

Silicon is used in many industrial and technological fields. Using this substance as an essential substance in manufacturing solar cells has a very great importance. The cost of producing such cells depends mainly upon the cost of producing silicon with high purity.

In this context, the Arab Science and Technology Foundation has run a research project funded by Abdul Latif Jameel (ALJ) Grant for funding scientific research in the Arab world. A team of Arab researchers have discovered a method of extracting silicon from the remnants of the factories of fertilizers. Through this method, silicon is extracted directly without the need of high temperatures like those used in traditional methods.
